Every Time Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji Were Like Their ‘Insecure’ Besties

Girls for life! Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji’s Insecure characters are thick as thieves, but the actresses are just as tight offscreen.

Insecure introduced the world to Issa (Rae) and Molly (Orji) when the series debuted on HBO in 2016. Fans have seen the duo in each other’s corners when facing their respective woes.

Though the duo’s real-life friendship appears to be filled with many highs, their characters’ onscreen bond has suffered major lows. When the fourth season of Insecure aired earlier in 2020, longtime viewers witnessed a fallout between Issa and Molly before they found their way back together by the finale’s end.

“They are friends, they are real-life friends, but there exists a specific dynamic in their friendship that both of them have gotten accustomed to,” Rae explained to Variety in May 2020. “They’re college friends who have taken on different paths.”

The Photograph actress continued, “Molly witnessed Issa being in this long relationship and this relationship that she may have aspired to, and I think, on Molly’s side, Issa has witnessed her take this journey to become this incredible lawyer. Like, her career has always been in check and Issa admires her social life.”

Orji, for her part, admitted to Vulture that same month that she didn’t like seeing the dynamic duo at odds. She also said that “it’s never easy to fight with Issa” onscreen.

“This season was very different because we didn’t see each other that much because Issa and Molly have their own lives,” she continued. “The fact that when we did get to see each other, it was under turmoil, I did not like this at all. By the time we got to episode five, it was an explosion, but at least it wasn’t the first time we fought — and it was building to this, so it was expected.”

In August 2020, the pair celebrated a special milestone in their careers when they both earned Emmy nominations. Rae nabbed her second Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series nod, while Orji scored her first-ever Emmys nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The show itself was also recognized for the first time with an Outstanding Comedy Series nomination.

Orji later raved about Insecure’s Emmys achievements via Instagram, where she praised Rae for being a “fearless leader” and the “OUTSTANDING LEADING ACTRESS that she is.”

    Stuck Like Glue

Orji noted what “an absolute honor” it was to be with Rae at the 2018 Emmys. “I love how we can spend all day Saturday together, then on Monday still have such immense joy and genuine affection when we enter each other’s presence on the red carpet and cut up, like no one else is watching,” the Yvonne Orji: Momma, I Made It! star wrote via Instagram. “You’ve BEEN a winner in my eyes, and last night changes nothing. Keep shining queen! And I’ll be right there, ready to rip a seam on a designer gown to applaud you every step of the way. Love, Y.”

    Somebody to Lean On

Orji opened up about how Rae helped in landing her first major acting role on Insecure. “It’s what Issa was able to see and turn to the producers and say, ‘Give her a shot,’” she said at the Glamour Women of the Year Summit in November 2018. “I didn’t have an agent, manager, anything. I had never acted. So this is HBO — Home Box Office — this is not, like, a small production. And this thing that I hunkered down and accomplished was what Issa was able to be like, ‘Let’s try her out!’”

    Celebrating Good Times

For Rae’s 35th birthday in January 2020, Orji posted a tribute to her costar that featured several sweet friendship moments between the pair. “Looking forward to sharing in all the shenanigans of your 35th year mama,” Orji wrote. “I will never NOT have a body roll ready for you or unceremoniously (and unsolicitedly) serenade you. (You know you LOVE IT!) Cheers to you today and everyday @issarae!”

    Back at It

Rae and Orji virtually reunited amid the coronavirus pandemic in June 2020 to discuss Insecure via Instagram. Before the chat kicked off, the Lovebirds actress referred to the comedian as “my girl.”

    Dream Team

After the duo both received 2020 Emmys nominations for Insecure, Orji revealed that they had a heart-to-heart. “We had a moment and I thanked her,” she told E! News in July 2020. “I was like, ‘Thank you for seeing something in me five years ago, for this moment. Thank you.’ She was like, ‘Girl, we all did it.’ It was a special moment. Batman and Robin. It’s still really good.”
